Chicago Bulls made an easy 118-100 victory over Utah Jazz on Saturday March 12, 2011. It was Bulls's 13th win in 15 games. With the past champions watching, the Chicago Bulls again looked like they’re bent on claiming their own spot in franchise history. 

Derrick Rose scored 17 points in a blistering first quarter as the Bulls grabbed a 37-17 lead, and Chicago set a franchise record with 18 3-pointers while pulling within percentage points of Boston. 

Noah said, “It’s huge, We understand that.”

It was a championship-level performance—in the first half, at least—on a night when Chicago celebrated the 20th anniversary of its first title. With Jordan, Pippen and other players and coaches from that team on hand for a halftime ceremony, the Bulls put on a show the old-timers could appreciate.

“We’re definitely not even close to where they were, but we’re trying to get there,” Deng said.

Rose, the All-Star point guard and MVP candidate, buried 5 of 11 3-pointers.

Deng added seven rebounds, six assists and three steals in another strong game despite a bruised left thigh. Joakim Noah contributed 16 points and nine rebounds, Kyle Korver scored 17, and C.J. Watson added 16 points and eight assists. The Bulls shot 52.6 percent overall, hitting 18 of 32 3-pointers, and won again even though Carlos Boozer missed his second game in as many nights with a sprained left ankle.

Chicago’s previous record for 3-pointers was 15 against Miami on Dec. 30, 1994. … The Bulls also set season-highs for points in the first quarter and in the first half (68).

Washington Wizards was defeated by Oklahoma City Thunder in a 116-89 match. Durant scored 32 points in a 116-89 blowout win over the Washington Wizards, but of more interest to Oklahoma City was the Thunder debut of center Kendrick Perkins, who started in his first action since a deadline trade from the Boston Celtics.

Perkins had six points and nine rebounds in 20 minutes of play, and said his conditioning was fine after missing nine games with a sprained left knee.

“I felt good,” he said. “A little rusty in some spots, but it felt good to be out there contributing in a positive way.”

Perkins got to ease into his new role in a game the Thunder dominated from the opening minutes.

Oklahoma City scored the game’s first eight points and held a double-digit lead with nearly five minutes left in the first quarter. The lead grew to 68-47 at halftime, equaling the Thunder’s largest point total for any half this season.

“I think it kind of sucks the energy out of the building once you start out like that,” Durant said.

It was the 25th time this season that Durant, the NBA scoring leader, scored at least 30 points. He scored 40 in the previous meeting between the two teams on Jan. 28.

Russell Westbrook had 18 points and 12 assists, and Daequan Cook had 18 points on 6 for 9 3-point shooting for Oklahoma City. The Thunder have now won four straight and six of seven, as well as the last five meetings against Washington. They are 23-4 this season against teams with sub-.500 records.

The Wizards missed their first four shots. Only one even hit the rim. Dirk Nowitzki  led seven players in double figures with 23 points, but he’s been sporadic since missing nine games from Dec. 28-Jan. 14 with a sprained right knee. He averaged 24.1 points before the injury and 20.5 in 19 games since returning. Nowitzki got some help against the Jazz, as Peja Stojakovic  scored 18 points and Shawn Marion  added 16 off the bench. Jason Kidd  had 12 assists. The Mavericks have had at least five double-figure scorers in 14 straight games.

“We were really making shots and sharing the ball,” Nowitzki said. “We had (seven) guys in double figures again, and that’s how we’ve been winning lately - sharing the ball, passing the ball, making shots.”

Stojakovic is averaging 15.5 points and shooting 54.5 percent (12 for 22) from 3-point range over his last four games.

“Peja’s one of the top five or six shooters all-time,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “If we can get him looks, there’s going to be a great chance he’ll knock them down.”

Nowitzki scored 24 points Jan. 31 in a 102-92 win against Washington in the most recent meeting, part of the Wizards’ latest dismal stretch in which they’ve lost 13 of 15.

Washington (15-42) dropped its fourth straight Friday, 121-113 at Miami, falling to 1-28 on the road. However, the Wizards hung tough with one of the league’s best teams and trailed only 63-61 at halftime.

Washington tied the game in the third quarter, but Nick Young twisted his ankle and had to leave to get re-taped. Young still finished with 38 points on 12 of 19 shooting, but the Heat pulled away with the Wizards’ leading scorer out nearly five minutes.

Tony Parker  scored 10 of his 18 points in less than 2 minutes during the first quarter to jump-start the San Antonio Spurs to a 118-94 rout of the Washington Wizards on Saturday night. Parker’s 10-point run came entirely on fast breaks, including three steals he converted into layups. It was part of a 12-0 run that gave San Antonio a 16-point lead, and the Spurs never looked back. Parker finished with 14 points in the quarter. The Spurs led 37-18 after the first quarter and 72-45 after the first half. The 72 points were the most San Antonio has scored in any half this season, and tied the most allowed in a first half by Washington.

New Jersey Nets beat by New York Knicks 105-95 on Saturday night. Reserve Toney Douglas  added 19 points and Landry Fields  had 14, making three big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Knicks won for just the second time in six games and improved to 27-26. Stoudemire missed his first game of the season with a sprained right big toe, but the Knicks overcame their All-Star’s absence by making 16 3-pointers, including Chandler’s that gave them the lead for good with 4:08 left. New York hasn’t had a losing record since falling to 8-9 after a loss to Atlanta on Nov. 27. The Knicks were 22-15 on Jan. 11 but have stumbled since, with Stoudemire and fellow captain Raymond Felton  hinting after Friday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers  that the Carmelo Anthony  trade speculation was partially behind their slump. Devin Harris scored 22 for the Nets, who were bidding for their first three-game winning streak in two years. Brook Lopez added 19 and Sasha Vujacic chipped in 15, but New Jersey shot just 42 percent from the field. The game drew an announced crowd of 18,711, the Nets’ first sellout of the season in their temporary home at the Prudential Center. But it was a pro-Knicks crowd that cheered louder for the visitors as they took control in the closing minutes.

Boston Celtics beat Los Angeles Lakers 109-96 in NBA finals rematch. Pierce scored 32 points, Kevin Garnett  had 18 points and 13 rebounds with a large bandage over a five-stitch cut on his head, and the Celtics overcame Kobe Bryant’s  41 points in a 109-96 victory over Los Angeles. Ray Allen  scored 21 points for the Celtics in the longtime rivals’ first meeting since Los Angeles rallied from a late 13-point deficit for an 83-79 win in the deciding game last June, ending an exhausting series in dramatic fashion.

“It’s another game, but it was definitely an emotional game, especially because we lost Game 7 here,” said Pierce, who dueled down the second-half stretch with Bryant. “It feels good to come back in this building and get a win.”

The Celtics overwhelmed the Lakers in the rematch, with Rajon Rondo catalyzing the offense by racking up 15 of his 16 assists after halftime. Boston showed off its enviably complete game, outrebounding the Lakers 43-30—a big problem for Boston in last season’s finale—while hitting nine 3-pointers and getting 34 assists to Los Angeles’ 10.

With his every assist against the defense of Bryant and Derek Fisher, Rondo also made a matter-of-fact statement about the Celtics’ prowess in areas the Lakers can’t match right now.

“We knew we could run on L.A.,” Rondo said. “L.A., given the personnel that we have, we thought we could outrun them.”

This victory also put the Eastern Conference-leading Celtics (36-11) well ahead of the Lakers (33-15) in the overall NBA standings.

Sacramento Kings beat (12-33) never trailed in winning consecutive games for the second time all season. The last time the Kings won back-to-back games was Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, the third and fourth games of the season.

“We’ve shown great strides in both focus and poise,” Kings coach Paul Westphal said. “We had some hard knocks early in the season, helping us deal with the bumps in the road.”

Cousins was again instrumental in a big win. He scored 27 points and had 10 rebounds in the 100-95 win over the Lakers and played just as well in tormenting the Hornets inside and also on the perimeter.

“(DeMarcus) is intelligent, he learns,” Westphal said. “He’s learning what works and what doesn’t. He’s changed some habits offensively.”

Cousins is playing confidently and also isn’t afraid to speak his mind. He had some harsh words for the Hornets’ Chris Paul after the All-Star guard committed a hard foul late in the game that sent Beno Udrih to the floor.

Paul made a 3-pointer with 17.2 seconds left to cut it to 104-99, Trevor Ariza then stole Hill’s errant pass and Paul made three free throws with 12 seconds left after he was fouled by Channing Frye.

The Hornets got the ball back with 10 seconds left when Steve Nash stepped out of bounds trying to control Hill’s wild inbounds pass. New Orleans wanted a goaltending call on Thornton’s late try.

“I guess it’s a hard call when the ball hits the backboard and then gets blocked,” Paul said. “We made it too hard on the guys who had to make a tough call at the end.” Hornets coach Monty Williams agreed.

I know I can score at any moment or get looks at any moment,” he said. “The third quarter I was able to do that.” The Nuggets had won seven of their previous nine regular-season games against Los Angeles at the Pepsi Center, but the Lakers’ size bettered Denver’s speed as the Nuggets lost for just the fifth time in 24 home games. Led by Gasol’s 13 boards and 10 from Odom, the Lakers outrebounded the Nuggets 47-27.

The starting lineup change moved Stoudemire back to his preferred position of power forward, but he scored 18 points on a dismal 8-of-25 shooting and had his streak of 20-point games snapped at 26. He also had 15 rebounds. San Antonio (37-6) won its 17th straight at home, but the Spurs won’t see much of the AT&T Center between now and March. Having finished this perfect four-game homestand, San Antonio plays 12 of its next 13 on the road, largely thanks to its annual Rodeo Road Trip that begins Feb. 1 in Portland.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who admonished his defense after the Knicks ran them up and down the floor in New York on Jan. 4, was in a better mood this time after holding New York to just 38 percent from the field.

“The bigs tonight, especially Timmy and DeJuan, were fantastic with Amare,” Popovich said

Turiaf had 10 points and 10 rebounds in his return to the starting lineup, but Chandler was ineffective off the bench. The Knicks’ second-leading scorer this season scored just six points.

It was the third double-double in four games for Blair, who scored 22 in a victory over Toronto on Wednesday. Blair was 8 of 12 from the floor, none bigger than his twisting, driving layup with 5:44 left that had an exasperated D’Antoni signaling timeout.
